National Events- 

  •  A dentist allegedly raped a 32-year-old woman in Uttar Pradesh after administering an injection which made her unconscious and also shot a video of the incident in the district, police said on Monday.

  •  Acknowledging the rich art and craft legacy of Srinagar, the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has nominated it in the category of Creative Cities Network for 2021 in Craft and Folk Art.

  •  A local salesman employed by a Kashmiri pandit businessman was shot dead by terrorists in Zainakadal area of Srinagar late Monday evening. This is the second incident of targeted killing in less than 24 hours in the capital city.

  •  Even as Pakistan and China have decided not to attend the high-level meeting here on Wednesday to review the situation in Afghanistan, the conclave will focus on security and ways to jointly deal with threats emanating from there.

  • Taking strong exception to the killing of an “innocent” Indian fisherman by the Pakistani security forces, India on Monday summoned a senior diplomat of the Pakistan High Commission here and lodged a protest.

  •  The Pakistan Government has lifted the ban on the extremist group Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) as a quid pro quo to the outfit calling off the recent anti-government protests that claimed the lives of over 20 people, half of them police personnel.

  •  Chinese military pilot Wang Yaping scripted history on Monday when she became the country’s first woman astronaut to walk in space as she moved out of the under-construction space station and took part in extravehicular activities along with her male colleague.

  • Hundreds of senior officials of the Communist Party of China (CPC) began a key four-day conclave here on Monday to deliberate and pass a rare “historical resolution” of the 100-year-old ruling party and pave the way for an unprecedented third term for President Xi Jinping. 

  •  Former US President Barack Obama says he believes that President Biden’s climate package will be “historic” and he welcomed the efforts of all US politicians, Democrats and Republicans, in working toward slowing down global warming.

  • Poland has increased security at its border with Belarus, on the European Union’s eastern border, after a large group of migrants in Belarus appeared to be congregating by the frontier, seeking to try to force their way into Poland, officials said Monday. Video footage from Belarusian media showed people using uprooted trees to try to get through a fence.

  • Keith Bradshaw, a former Marylebone Cricket Club chief executive and early proponent of day-night test matches, has died. He was 58. Cricket Australia issued a statement Tuesday describing Bradshaw as a “universally loved and respected leader in the game.” 

  •  Captain-in waiting Rohit Sharma made shortwork of a modest target with an elegant half-century after spinners reigned supreme as India on Virat Kohli’s last day as shortest format captain ended their T20 World Cup campaign with an emphatic nine-wicket victory over Namibia here on Monday.

  •  The Indian batters’ failure to score enough against strong teams was the primary reason for the team’s ordinary campaign in the T20 World Cup, said legendary former captain Sunil Gavaskar, urging the side to change its approach in power-play overs.

  •  Australia have agreed to tour Pakistan for the first time in 24 years for a full series next year, providing a much-needed shot in the arm for the country’s cricket following the recent pullouts by England and New Zealand over security concerns.

  • Inter Milan was the more disappointed side after the Milan derby match ended in a 1-1 draw, despite AC Milan being the team that missed out on taking the outright lead of Serie A. Former Milan midfielder Hakan Çalhanoglu converted a penalty for Inter in the 11th minute — and celebrated fiercely against the club he left in June on a free transfer after four years. Milan leveled thanks to an own-goal by defender Stefan de Vrij shortly after, and Inter also had a penalty saved in a high-tempo first half.

  •  Smartphone maker OnePlus has officially announced the Pac-Man Edition of the Nord 2. According to the company, the smartphone will be sold in a single variant with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage for Rs 37,999.

  •  Sundar Pichai-run Alphabet, Google's parent company, has finally breached the coveted $2 trillion market cap milestone.

  •  The U.S. Justice Department charged a Ukraine national and a Russian in one of the worst ransomware attacks against American targets, court filings showed.

  •  Python has been a very popular programming language for a while now. However, a report by The Next Web suggests that its Rust has emerged as the highest paying programming language of 2021.

Economy – 

  • The Reserve Bank on Monday said FPIs have been permitted to invest in debt securities issued by Infrastructure Investment Trusts (InvITs) and Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) by Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs).  Necessary amendments to Foreign Exchange Management (Debt Instruments) Regulations, 2019 were earlier notified in October. 

  •  Markets regulator Sebi on Monday allowed foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) to write off all debt securities that they are unable to sell.  This will be applicable only to such FPIs who wish to surrender their registration, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) said in a circular.

  •  Paytm’s Rs 18,300-crore IPO -- India’s largest public issue to date - was subscribed only 18 per cent on the first day of bidding on Monday.

  •  Senior defence officials of the US and India attended the Defence Industry Collaboration Forum Virtual Expo that focused on securing supply chains in critical sectors like the semiconductor industry, the Pentagon said.

  • After opening on a choppy note, the 30-share index was trading 118.07 points or 0.20 per cent higher at 60,663.68 in initial deals. Similarly, the Nifty rose 36.45 points or 0.20 per cent to 18,105 amid high volatility.
