• 1973 – A national speed limit is imposed on the Autobahn in Germany because of the 1973 oil crisis. The speed limit lasts only four months.

• 1974 – Donald Johanson and Tom Gray discover the 40% complete Australopithecus afarensis skeleton, nicknamed "Lucy" (after The Beatles song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds"),in the Awash Valley of Ethiopia's Afar Depression.

National Events- 

•  Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday demanded that the government provide credible data on Covid deaths in the country and pay a compensation of Rs 4 lakh each to families of Covid-19 victims.

•  Amid a row over Congress leader Manish Tewari’s views on the UPA dispensation’s 26/11 Mumbai terror attack response, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman claimed the “clear-headed response” in national security matters adopted during the Narendra Modi government was “missing” before 2014.

•  The Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld a scheme of the then ruling AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu granting a waiver of outstanding crop loans, medium-term (agriculture) loans, and long-term (farm sector) loans issued to small and marginal farmers.

• Arguing that the pace of transition to cleaner energy sources in India must be viewed in light of “national circumstances”, Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav has said that the use of coal in power generation or industrial activities may rise “in absolute terms”, but would decline as a percentage of the overall mix. 

• Heading into what could be a stormy winter session of Parliament, the government intends to bring a Bill to repeal the three new agriculture laws and another on prohibiting “all private cryptocurrencies in India” with “certain exceptions”.

•  Platform IQAir said that Lahore now stands at the top of its polluted cities ranking with an air quality index of 203 on the US AQI scale, versus runner-up Delhi, India, with 183. That standing was at 0949 GMT; the two cities had traded places at least once over the course of the morning

•  A manuscript co-authored by Albert Einstein, offering a rare insight into the legendary physicist’s thinking leading up to his general theory of relativity, was sold in an auction on Tuesday for 11.7 million euros ($13.17 million).

•  A patch of virtual real estate in the online world Decentraland sold for a record $2.4 million worth of cryptocurrency, the buyer crypto investor Tokens.com and Decentraland said on Tuesday.

•  The world’s first planetary defense system called the DART spacecraft was successfully launched by NASA at 10:21 pm Pacific time on Tuesday (11:51 am IST Wednesday) from the Vandenberg US Space Force Base. It was carried aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket.

•  As scientists planned an expedition in Mexico this fall to count one of the world’s most endangered animals, a shy porpoise called a vaquita, they dreaded the possibility that there would be none left to find. The last survey, in 2019, estimated that only about 10 remained.

•  NASA is about to launch a spacecraft with one simple mission: Smash into an asteroid at 15,000 mph.

• A young female mammoth was wandering long ago near what would become the Central Coast of California, when her life came to an untimely end. Although she died on land, her massive body found its way into the Pacific Ocean. Carried by currents, her remains drifted more than 150 miles from shore before settling 3,000 feet beneath the water’s surface on the side of a seamount. There she sat for millenniums, her existence known to no one.

Economy – 

•  Former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Raghuram Rajan on Wednesday said that regulators do not have the capability to monitor cyber risk in crypto exchanges

•  Star Health and Allied Insurance Company on Wednesday said it has fixed a price band of Rs 870-900 a share for its Rs 7,249-crore initial public offering, which will open on November 30.

• The Group of Ministers (GoM) constituted to review the current rate slab structure under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime will meet on November 27 to discuss various proposals for rate rationalisation and measures to shore up revenues. While an officer-level fitment committee is learnt to have recommended raising of tax rates from 5 per cent to 7 per cent and 18 per cent to 20 per cent, some state finance ministers have flagged potential concerns over the impact of such major rate changes and indications are that all of the recommendations made the officer-level panel are unlikely to be accepted by the GoM.

• The Delhi High Court Wednesday said it will pass directions to ensure safety and security in courts which will remain in force till April 18. 

•  Dhyandev Wankhede, father of NCB Zonal Director Sameer Wankhede, Wednesday approached the Bombay High Court with an appeal challenging the single-judge bench order, which refused to grant an interim injunction against Maharashtra cabinet minister and NCP leader Nawab Malik in his defamation suit.

•  The Enforcement Directorate has arrested Aashish Jhunjhunwala, director, M/s Ramsarup Industries Limited, Kolkata in connection with a bank fraud case worth Rs 184.43 crore. The arrest on Saturday was made under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002.

•  The Madras High Court will soon decide if a minor can be appointed as a temple priest and kept cut off from society as per the tradition of a temple and the Badaga community in the Nilgris district of Tamil Nadu.
