Agilysys Company History
Agilysys traces its roots to two companies formed in the mid-twentieth century: Standard Radio, formed in 1932, and Pioneer, founded in 1946. These two companies merged as an Ohio corporation in 1963 to create Pioneer-Standard Electronics, Inc. with its principal office in Cleveland.
While originally focused on electronic components distribution, the company grew to become a leading distributor in both electronic components and enterprise computer systems products and solutions. The company conducted an initial public offering in 1971 and commenced trading on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol PIOS.
At the beginning of 2003, the company was structured into two divisions, the Computer Systems Division (CSD),which focused on the distribution and reselling of enterprise computer systems products and solutions, and the Industrial Electronics Division (IED),which focused on the distribution of electronic components. Each division represented approximately one-half of the company’s total revenues.
In February 2003, the company sold the IED and announced a strategic transformation to focus solely on its enterprise computer solutions business. The proceeds from the sale increased the company’s financial flexibility and were used to reduce debt and fund growth of the company’s enterprise computer solutions business, both organically and through acquisition.
In September 2003, shareholders of the company approved the renaming of Pioneer-Standard Electronics to Agilysys, Inc., a combination of “agile” and “systems,” which better reflects a technology solutions organization that delivers tools, knowledge and value to its customers.
From 2003 through 2006, Agilysys made a series of acquisitions broadening its IT solutions offering, and additionally, positioning it as a leading source for technology solutions in the retail and hospitality industries. In 2006, the company moved its headquarters from Cleveland to Boca Raton, Fla.
In 2007, the company divested its computer systems distribution business to focus exclusively on being a leading provider of innovative IT solutions.
In 2008, the company announced that it was relocating its headquarters from Boca Raton, Fla. back to Cleveland, where it maintains its executive offices.
Today, Agilysys is a leading developer and marketer of proprietary enterprise software, services and solutions to the hospitality and retail industries. The Company specializes in market-leading point-of-sale, property management, inventory & procurement and mobile & wireless solutions that are designed to streamline operations, improve efficiency and enhance the consumer’s experience. Agilysys serves casinos, resorts, hotels, foodservice venues, stadiums, cruise lines, grocery stores, convenience stores, general & specialty retail businesses and partners.
