  •  One of two people accused of raping a 24-year-old law student in Vadodara and then leaking a video of the act online was held from Junagadh on Tuesday, Gujarat police said.

  •  After establishing the Ministry of Cooperation for strengthening cooperatives in the country, the Government is now mulling creation of a cooperative brand “Proudly Co-op” which it wants not to be restricted just to India but present world over. 

  • The Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday announced the bypolls to three Lok Sabha seats and 30 assembly constituencies spread across various states on October 30. 

  • Those who received Covaxin vaccine will have to wait more for taking up international travel. The emergency use authorisation (EUA) for Covaxin, the Covid vaccine developed in India, has been further delayed as the World Health Organization (WHO) has sent more technical queries to its Hyderabad vaccine manufacturer Bharat Biotech, sources have said.

International Events- 

  •  The Taliban banned barbershops in a southern Afghanistan province from shaving or trimming beards, claiming their edict is in line with Shariah, or Islamic, law. The order in Helmand province was issued Monday by the provincial Taliban government’s vice and virtue department to barbers in Lashkar Gah, the provincial capital.

  •  Republican senators blocked a Bill to keep the Government operating and allow federal borrowing, but Democrats aiming to avert a shutdown pledged to try again — at the same time pressing ahead on President Joe Biden’s big plans to reshape Government.

  •  Youth climate activists Vanessa Nakate and Greta Thunberg chastised global leaders  on Tuesday for failing to meet funding pledges and for delivering too much “blah blah blah’’ as climate change wreaks havoc around the world. They even cast doubt on the intentions behind a youth climate gathering where they were speaking in Milan.

  •  France and Greece on Tuesday announced a multibillion-euro defense deal, including Athens’ decision to buy three French warships as part of a strategy to boost its defense capacities in the Eastern Mediterranean amid recurring tensions with longtime foe Turkey.

  • China’s top diplomat has held a virtual meeting with NATO’s chief to discuss the situation in Afghanistan, amid longstanding disagreements between Beijing and the US-led alliance over regional policies. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said Tuesday that the discussions had been “positive and constructive”. Foreign Minister Wang Yi and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg had spoken the previous day, according to the statement, focusing on “issues of common concern.”

  •  The IPL Governing Council on Tuesday decided that the two final league stage games will start concurrently at 7:30 PM IST instead of the usual double header with one game starting in the afternoon. The norm till date has been one game at 3:30 PM IST followed by evening match at 7:30 pm but the games will start at same time in order to avoid giving any unfair advantage to any team in case the last match has an outfit which has mathematical chance of qualification.

  • Struggling at 96/5 on a very slow surface at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, it looked like Kolkata Knight Riders would make heavy weather of the small target of 128 runs against Delhi Capitals in the UAE leg of the IPL 2021 on Tuesday. But a couple of big shots by spinner Sunil Narine and Nitish Rana helped them to a three wickets win.

  •  Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday said there should be no compromise on data privacy and safeguard of client data with an increasing number of Indians now using digital mode of payment. 

  •  Centre on September 15 received multiple financial bids for divestment of Air India. Accordingly, Tata Sons and industrialist Ajay Singh in his personal capacity are believed to have submitted financial bids for Air India.

  • Banks, big technology companies and fintech can collaborate for better customer acquisition and use analytics for an informed credit decision, Standard Chartered Bank MD Zarin Daruwala said on Tuesday.  

  • After plunging over 1,032 points during the session, the 30-share BSE barometer pared some losses to end 410.28 points or 0.68 per cent lower at 59,667.60. The broader Nifty of the National Stock Exchange declined by 106.50 points or 0.60 per cent to close at 17,748.60, dragged down by Bharti Airtel and Tech Mahindra.
