National Events- 

•  Close on the heels of a fire tragedy in an apartment in which two elderly women were burnt alive on Wednesday, in another incident three people died, and four others were severely injured in a suspected blast on Thursday in Bengaluru, Karnataka

•  The Madhya Pradesh High Court has directed the State Government to provide free treatment to  Bhopal gas tragedy victims suffering from cancer at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Bhopal. The court issued the order on September 16 and a copy of it was made available on Wednesday.   

• The PM CARES Fund is not a Government of India fund and the amount collected by it does not go to the Consolidated Fund of India, the Delhi High Court has been informed.

•  The CBI has booked UK-based firm Molinare Limited and its Indian directors for cheating the Bank of India’s London branch to the tune of `192.48 crore

•  With 31,923 new Covid cases in the last 24 hours — which is an increase of 18.4 percent from a day ago— the country’s total caseload now stands at 3,35,63,421. The top five states which have registered maximum cases are Kerala with 19,675 cases, followed by Maharashtra with 3,608 cases, Tamil Nadu with 1,682 cases, Andhra Pradesh with 1,365 cases, and Mizoram with 1,294 cases. India reported 282 in the last 24 hours, taking the total death toll to 4,46,050

International Events- 

•  The Taliban, which now rules Afghanistan after overthrowing the elected government of President Ashraf Ghani, are unlikely to represent their country at the high-level United Nations General Assembly session as representatives of the ousted dispensation still occupy the office at the UN, a Pakistani media report said on Thursday. 

•  The Taliban’s newly appointed envoy to the United Nations on Wednesday urged quick world recognition of Afghanistan’s new rulers even as the World Health Organisation raised the alarm of an impending health care disaster in the war-wracked country. 

•  With increasingly strong talk in support of Taiwan, a new deal to supply Australia with nuclear submarines, and the launch of a European strategy for greater engagement in the Indo-Pacific, the US, and its allies are becoming more assertive in their approach toward a rising China

•  China sent 19 fighter jets toward Taiwan in a large display of force on Thursday, after the self-governing island announced its intention to join an 11-nation Pacific trade group that China has also applied to join.

• India’s Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs Reenat Sandhu, speaking at the Community of Democracies 10th Ministerial Conference ‘Democracy and Resilience: Shared Goals’, said it is important that the new government in Afghanistan is broad-based and inclusive, representing all sections of Afghan society, including women and minorities

•  The market capitalization of BSE-listed companies reached an all-time high of Rs  261.73 lakh crore on Thursday, helped by a massive rally in the equities where the benchmark Sensex zoomed 958 points to end at a fresh lifetime peak.

•  The market valuation of Reliance Industries Limited went past the Rs 16 lakh crore mark in intra-day trade on Thursday following a rally in its share price. 

•  The rupee rebounded by 23 paise to close at 73.64 against the US dollar on Thursday following an improved risk appetite among investors triggered by positive global cues.

•  Amazon has been of late and also for some time now making some contradictory statements about its legal expenses in India. The company has claimed that it incurred a meager expense of Rs 52 crore towards legal fees in FY20.

•  NSE Nifty soared 276.30 points or 1.57 percent to its new closing peak of 17,822.95. It touched an intra-day record of 17,843.90. After scaling a new peak of 59,957.25 during the day, the 30-share Sensex settled 958.03 points or 1.63 percent up at an all-time high of 59,885.36.
