National Events- 

  •  18k covid cases and 263 deaths recorded in India in the last 24 hours

  •  The National Investigation Agency filed a supplementary chargesheet against two terrorists of the Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen (TuM),including a Pakistan-based handler, in a special court here on Monday in a case related to smuggling of arms, ammunition and narcotics into Jammu and Kashmir, an agency spokesperson said.

  •  The Centre on Monday said that 70 per cent of India’s adult population has been administered the first dose of Covid-19 vaccine. “Strong Nation, Rapid Vaccination: India has administered the first dose of #COVID19 vaccine on 70% of the population.

  •  Unitech Group’s former promoter Sanjay Chandra’s wife Preeti Chandra and his father Ramesh Chandra were arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on Monday in connection with a money laundering case, officials told India Today.

  • The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) headquarters here has directed all its formations across the country to ensure that all the personnel wear the CRPF disruptive pattern uniform on every Friday.

International Events- 

  •  South and North Korea restored their direct communication lines on Monday, raising hopes for the resumption of stalled dialogue amid a deadlock in denuclearization talks.

  •  Taliban forces raided an Islamic State affiliate’s hideout in the Afghan capital and killed several insurgents, hours after a deadly bombing outside a mosque in Kabul, the Taliban said Monday.

  •  A small private plane carrying six passengers and a crew of two crashed Sunday into a vacant, two-story office building in a Milan suburb, and Italian news reports said all aboard perished. 

  •  Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has been sworn in for a second five-year term running a country in the grip of a nearly year-long war.

  • Japan’s parliament on Monday elected Fumio Kishida, a former moderate turned hawk, as prime minister. He’ll face an economy battered by the pandemic, security threats from China and North Korea and leadership of a political party whose popularity is sagging ahead of a fast-approaching crucial national election.

Awards and honours-

  • Two scientists won the Nobel Prize in medicine on Monday for their discoveries into how the human body perceives temperature and touch, revelations that could lead to new ways of treating pain or even heart disease. Americans David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian separately identified receptors in the skin as part of their work in the field of somatosensation, which explores the ability of specialized organs such as eyes, ears and skin to see, hear and feel. Julius used capsaicin, the active component in chili peppers, to help pinpoint the nerve sensors that respond to heat, while Patapoutian found pressure-sensitive sensors in cells that respond to mechanical stimulation, the committee said.

  • Microsoft on Tuesday announced that Windows 11 is now available through a free upgrade on eligible Windows 10 PCs and on new PCs pre-installed with Windows 11 worldwide.

Economy – 

  •  India's services sector activity continued to expand in September, supported by favourable underlying demand amid the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, but lost some momentum from August's 18-month high level, a monthly survey said on Tuesday.

  •  The Indian rupee tumbled 19 paise to end at its weakest level in over six weeks of 74.31 against the US dollar on Monday as a stronger greenback against key rivals and rising crude oil prices weighed on investor sentiment.

  •  Markets regulator Sebi on Monday proposed a minimum price band of 5 per cent for public issues through book built process and sub-categorisation of non-institutional investors.  Sebi has invited comments on its proposals in a consultation paper for review of price band and book building framework for public issues. 

  •  Investors’ wealth grew by Rs  3,10,851.75 crore on Monday as markets made a comeback after falling for four days. The 30-share BSE benchmark jumped 533.74 points or 0.91 per cent to 59,299.32.

  • After slumping to 59,127.04 in the opening session, the 30-share Sensex was trading 102.49 points or 0.17 per cent lower at 59,196.83. Similarly, the Nifty fell 28.60 points or 0.16 per cent to 17,662.65.
