NATIONAL

  • Prahlad Singh Patel to inaugurate an exhibition titled- “Jallianwala Bagh”on 11th March. On the occasion of 130th Foundation Day of National Archives of India (NAI),Union Minister of State for Culture and Tourism Prahlad Singh will inaugurate the exhibition which is an endeavour to commemorate the centenary of Jallianwala Bagh Massacre covering a period from 1915 to 1950 at the premises of National Archives, New Delhi.
  • Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) gets best airport ASQ survey award. (MIA) was adjudged the best airport by size and region in the category of 2-5 million passengers per year in Asia-Pacific Region at the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) awards. 34 key performance indicators under eight major categories were assessed during the survey.
  • COVID-19: Telcos use caller tune to spread awareness. Department of Telecom (DoT) has asked telecom operators to put coronavirus awareness messages as a caller tune instead of the regular ringtone to make citizens aware of the disease in India. 

 

INTERNATIONAL

  • Coronavirus: Qatar bans entry of people from India, 13 other countries. The temporary ban would also be applicable on people coming from Bangladesh, China, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Syria and Thailand.
  • Dow slumps 2,000 points after oil shock. Wall Street suffered its biggest one-day loss since the 2008 financial crisis on Monday and recession worries loomed large as tumbling oil prices and ongoing coronavirus fears prompted investor panic on the anniversary of the U.S. stock market's longest-ever bull run

 

ECONOMY

  • Market mayhem: Sensex, Nifty log steepest ever one-day fall on recession fears. The benchmark Sensex lost a whopping 1,941.67 points or 5.27% to close at 35,634.95 — a 52-week low for the barometer — with all its 30 constituents ending the day with huge losses.
  • PhonePe partners with ICICI Bank, to continue alliance with Yes Bank. PhonePe is engaged in dialogue with State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank and RBL Bank. It had seen a service outage for nearly 24 hours, which started immediately after the RBI placed Yes Bank on moratorium on March 5

 

DEFENSE

  • IAF's first women fighter pilots get 'Nari Shakti Puraskar'. The trio -- Mohana Jitarwal, Avani Chaturvedi and Bhawana Kanth -- was inducted into the IAF's fighter squadron after the government decided to open fighter stream in the force for women on an experimental basis. The three were first to be inducted into the squadron and conduct a solo flight in MIG-21 in 2018.
  • In a first, India figures on arms exporters list. The latest data on global arms transfer by SIPRI shows that Indian arms imports have come down significantly (by 32%) since 2015, indicating that the ‘Make in India’ initiative is gaining ground but the country is still ranked as the world’s second biggest weapons buyers, just behind Saudi Arabia.

 

SPORTS

  • PV Sindhu wins 'BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year' award. Sindhu competed with four other strong nominees, namely Mary Kom (boxing),Vinesh Phogat (wrestling),Dutee Chand (athletics) and Manasi Joshi (para-badminton). PT Usha gets lifetime achievement award.
  • Asian Olympic Qualifiers: Simaranjit, Mary Kom, Amit Panghal earns Olympic quota. India equalled their highest boxing quota tally of eight, which they had achieved in 2012 for the London Olympics.
