  • 1394 – The Korean king Yi Seong-gye, founder of the Joseon dynasty, moves the capital from Kaesŏng to Hanyang, today known as Seoul.

  • 1549 – The papal conclave of 1549–50 begins.

  • 1612 – The Battle of Swally takes place, which loosens the Portuguese Empire's hold on India.

  • 1729 – Natchez Indians massacre 138 Frenchmen, 35 French women, and 56 children at Fort Rosalie, near the site of modern-day Natchez, Mississippi.

  • 1732 – The magnitude 6.6 Irpinia earthquake causes 1,940 deaths in the former Kingdom of Naples, southern Italy.

  • 1777 – San Jose, California, is founded as Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe by José Joaquín Moraga. It is the first civilian settlement, or pueblo, in Alta California.

  • 1781 – The crew of the British slave ship Zong murders 133 Africans by dumping them into the sea to claim insurance.

  • 1963 – Trans-Canada Air Lines Flight 831 crashes shortly after takeoff from Montreal-Dorval International Airport, killing all 118 people on board.

  • 1963 – "I Want to Hold Your Hand", recorded on October 17, 1963, is released by the Beatles in the United Kingdom.

  • 1967 – Vietnam War: U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara announces his resignation.

  • 1972 – Atari releases Pong, the first commercially successful video game.

  • 1986 – The Surinamese military attacks the village of Moiwana during the Suriname Guerrilla War, killing at least 39 civilians, mostly women and children.

  • 1987 – North Korean agents plant a bomb on Korean Air Flight 858, which kills all 115 passengers and crew.

  • 2007 – The Armed Forces of the Philippines lay siege to the Peninsula Manila after soldiers led by Senator Antonio Trillanes stage a mutiny.

  • 2009 – Maurice Clemmons shoots and kills four police officers inside a coffee shop in Lakewood, Washington.

National Events- 

  •  Amid indications that the Union government may push for the suspension of some of the Opposition members over the acrimonious scenes that were witnessed during the passage of the General Insurance Business (Nationalisation) Amendment Bill in the last session, Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu on Monday in his opening address touched upon the issue saying the “bitter and unpleasant experiences” of the last monsoon session “still continue to haunt most of us.”

  •  The Lok Sabha passed the Farm Laws Repeal Bill on Monday without any discussions even as the Opposition was vociferously demanding talks regarding it.

  •  Ahead of Parliament’s Winter Session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday said that the government is ready to discuss all issues in the House. Discussions and not the disruptions should be the yardstick on which the success of Parliament should be weighed, the prime minister said, addressing the media outside Parliament.

  • A three-member panel constituted by the Supreme Court to look into allegations of snooping by the government using Israeli company NSO’s software Pegasus is learnt to have sent out mails to the petitioners asking them to submit their personal devices for “technical evaluation”. 

  • With an eye on reports from across the world about Omicron, the new Covid “variant of concern”, the Central Government Sunday issued revised guidelines for international travellers arriving from Europe, including the UK, and 11 other “at risk” countries, mandating testing on arrival, home quarantine for seven days on a negative result, and a retest on the eighth day.

International Events- 

  • Australia will review its plans to reopen borders to skilled migrants and students from Dec. 1, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Monday, after the country reported its first cases of the Omicron coronavirus variant. 

  • Japan announced Monday it will suspend entry of all foreign visitors from around the world as a new coronavirus variant spreads. 

  •  Member states of the World Health Organization have reached a tentative consensus to negotiate a future agreement on preventing pandemics, bridging the gap between sides led by the European Union and United States, diplomats said on Sunday.

  •  South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Sunday that authorities were considering making Covid-19 shots compulsory for certain places and activities, as a rise in infections linked to a new variant threatens to become a fourth wave.

  • The top U.S. infectious disease official, Dr. Anthony Fauci, told President Joe Biden on Sunday it will take about two weeks to have definitive information on the new coronavirus variant Omicron that has sparked new travel restrictions and shaken financial markets. Biden, returning to Washington following the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, was briefed in person by his coronavirus response team on Sunday afternoon as officials expect the new variant to reach the United States despite an impending ban on travelers from Southern Africa, where it was first detected.

  • England all-rounder Ben Stokes has revealed that a tablet taken wrongly caused him to “choke horribly” and fear for his life ahead of the first Ashes Test against Australia here from December 8. 

  •  Stiffness in the neck did not allow India wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha to take the field on day five of the first Test against New Zealand here on Monday.

  •  Apple recently closed its business in Turkey due to concerns about the sharp drop in the exchange rate of the Turkish lira

  • Visa Inc has complained to the U.S. government that India's "informal and formal" promotion of domestic payments rival RuPay hurts the U.S. giant

Economy – 

  • The 30-share BSE Sensex tumbled by 585.22 points or 1.02 per cent to 56,521.93 points with 25 of its components trading in the red. The broader Nifty of the National Stock Exchange tanked 191.40 points or 1.12 pc to 16,835.05 as Adani Ports, Tata Motors and Hero MotoCorp dropped 

  •  The Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) has published a draft framework for cross border insolvency proceedings based on the UNCITRAL (United Nations Commission on International Trade Law) model under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code.

  •  After Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea, Reliance Jio on Sunday announced up to 21 per cent hike in its prepaid tariffs from the next month.

  •  The Indian telecom industry’s gone through a significant churn: from a period of more than a dozen different companies competing with each other to a three-player market. While the new telecom reforms announced by the government will help the companies improve their health as well as boost investor confidence in the sector, the government also needs to rethink about the “high pricing of the spectrum”, director general of Cellular Operators Association of India Dr S P Kochhar told Aashish Aryan.

  • Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have pumped in a net sum of Rs 5,319 crore in the domestic capital markets despite a massive correction seen in equities over the last fortnight.

  •  The Supreme Court on Monday asked states in the National Capital Region and Punjab to apprise it about the implementation of various directions given by it and ‘The Commission for Air Quality Management in National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas’ for curbing air pollution and said that it might set up an independent task force to ensure compliance.

  • Dhyandev Wankhede, father of NCB zonal director Sameer Wankhede, on Monday gave his consent to the proposed draft terms given by Maharashtra cabinet minister and NCP leader Nawab Malik to quash a single-judge order which had refused to grant interim relief to Wankhede in a defamation suit. 

  •  Celebrating the party’s clean sweep in Tripura civic polls, the West Bengal unit of the BJP targeted the Trinamool Congress (TMC) for claiming that it has made inroads in the northeastern state.

  • Days after two foreign nationals from South Africa tested positive for Covid-19 in Bengaluru upon arrival and it was said they have been affected by the Delta variant, state Health Minister Dr K Sudhakar said it was found that at least one of the two has been affected by “a variant different from the Delta variant”.
