                                Frequently Asked Questions For Southern Railway

Q1. How can I find a list of current vacancies?
A. All our vacancies are listed on our website which is updated regularly. Always check that you have selected the ‘date posted’ box which allows you to review jobs that have been on the site for up to a maximum of 1 month.

Q2. What if I can’t see any vacancies on your site?
A. There may be occasions when we have no vacancies available.

Q3. How old do you have to be to apply for a job at Southern?
A. Some of our jobs do have age limits stipulated by safety critical regulations. You must be 21 years of age In order to carry out train driving duties on the mainline. However, you can apply for a Trainee Driver job from the age of 20. For other safety critical jobs, such as Platform Assistant and Conductor, you must be 18 years of age. Our engineering apprenticeship starts from the age of 16.You can also apply for non-safety critical posts from the age of 16 but such opportunities are few. Q4. How do I apply for a vacancy with Southern Railway?
A. You will need to register before making an online application. 

Q5. Is this the only way I can apply?
A. Yes, we no longer deal with paper, ‘on-spec’ or telephone applications.

Q6. I’ve registered but forgotten my password. What do I do?
A. You will have a maximum of three attempts to input your chosen password. Still can’t get in? Click on the ‘forgotten your password?’ button. You’ll then receive an email with a new password generated by the system. You will then input the given password and will be asked to change this to another password of your choosing. If you still can’t get in you’ll have to go through this all over again, starting at the ‘forgotten your password?’ button. 

Q7. When do I have to get my completed application in by?
A. By 23.45 hours on the advertised closing date.

Q8. Do I need to submit my CV?
A. No, but a CV may help your application. Ideally, your CV should be a ‘Word’ document no larger than 100kb.

Q9. How do I know that you have received my application?
A. If you check your account, your status will be updated to confirm your application.

Q10. When will I hear back whether or not my application has been successful?
A. Check your account; it will be updated to allow you to see your progress at each stage of the recruitment process. We usually aim to screen applications within a week of the closing date; however, due to the number of applications received, this can sometimes take a little longer.

Q11. If my application is unsuccessful, can I get feedback?
A. Yes, please contact the resourcing team.

Q12. I am having trouble submitting my answers to the questions for the role I have applied.
A. You will need to check that you have completed your profile page and included your National Insurance Number and both postal and email addresses.Check that you have answered every question. Some questions just require you to select a ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ answer so make sure that you have not missed any of them. You will know that you have answered all the questions as there will be a ‘submit test’ button.

Q13. I have passed an assessment but was unsuccessful at interview; do I have to re-sit the assessment?
A. A successful assessment result at Southern is valid for 5 years.

Q14. Do you have any way of letting me know when you have a vacancy suitable for me?
A. When you register, ensure that you sign up for job alerts. Go to ‘My Account’ and select the preferences options: within this section you can select the job areas that interest you.
